Chapter Seventeen

Jules planned on going to Tyler Ridge again, but not on this wet November day.

She’d already told her aunt she was returning there but now wondered if that was the best thing to do. Perhaps she should keep her plans to herself from now on, in case Patty had said what Branigan claimed. If she hadn’t, which Jules erred toward, why would he lie? What concern was it of his anyway? While one part of her wanted to confront Patty, just to make absolutely certain, the other half found herself sympathetic to his wishes. Patty’s life, after the tragedy she’d suffered, was good, it was stable. The only unstable thing in that life had always been Jules and her dysfunctional family. Perhaps that was why Jules had stayed away for so long, because subconsciously she harbored guilt. And now here she was, back again, causing more trouble with her unfounded suspicions.

You are not causing trouble!

Ah, the two voices in her head, so readily they warred with each other.

Jules was in the house, and Branigan was in the house. Just the two of them still. He’d left her and returned to the reading room. Should she take what he’d said further, confront him about it, demand to know exactly what he’d meant?

Or…she could just go home.

That was the other alternative. Let some sleeping dogs lie but awaken others.

Namely Jerry.

Dread seized her, and anger too, the latter sparked, perhaps, by what had just happened with Branigan. It rose up within and gained a stronghold. Just what the fuck was wrong with Jerry anyway? Getting so shitty? When she’d broken things off with him, he’d been upset, but she’d thought he’d at least accepted it. Only since she’d come to Rutherford had his tone changed. Like he’d had time to sit and count the various ways in which she’d wounded him, creating a future for them that was never possible, not when one didn’t love the other. Love? She was growing to detest him. Never get that desperate, Jules. Don’t try and force a relationship to work, which she was already guilty of. Meeting up with him when she finally got back, though, was probably inevitable. It would give her the opportunity to reiterate what she’d said when she’d first split with him, drum it into his thick skull. It’s over. Accept it. Because if you don’t…

She paused.

What would she do if he didn’t? File for an ex parte order of protection? She shook her head at the thought of it. Also, what odd turns her life was taking lately. Ones she couldn’t have foreseen. At a loss for what to do next, still fuming, she headed into the dining room and grabbed her cell phone off the table, glad she’d deleted Jerry from that, at least.

Lenny had texted—something that chipped away at the anger—inquiring how the trip to Stovington had gone. She was beginning to tell him everything, all her plans and ideas regarding Grace, and he seemed just as eager that she succeed.
